Date: 4th April 2025

Location: Chandavne nights camping, Bhor

Overview:

Conceptus Celestia was a public ‘Star Party’ event organized by the Antariksh club of VI. Held on the 4th of April and extending into the morning of the 5th, the event took place at Chandavne nights camping, a secluded and dark location approximately 64 kilometers from Pune, ensuring minimal light pollution for optimal night sky observation. The event was a resounding success, enjoyed by 80 attendees who had the opportunity to observe constellations, deep sky objects, and participate in two insightful sessions led by Sir Jameer Manur and Pranav Pujari.

The first session, held before dinner while the moon was still visible, saw Jameer Sir enlightening the audience on the detailed history of constellations, methods for their identification, and techniques for using night sky patterns to determine polar directions and other geographical relationships. Following this, a doubt-clearing session with both Sir Jameer and Sir Pranav addressed queries about the night sky, stars, and deep sky objects, while also dispelling common myths linking astronomy and astrology. The second session, conducted after dinner and moonset, provided information on various calendar systems, the rationale behind the number of months in a year, and the connection of their names to corresponding constellations. With the moon now set, the audience was primed for observing the midnight sky.

Equipment Used:

* 10 inch telescope

* 8 inch telescope

* 2x 6 inch telescopes

* 4 inch telescope

Observations:

1. Moon:

The waxing crescent moon was observed in exceptional detail, revealing defined craters and dimensions, offering a strong sense of depth.

2. Planetary Observations:

Mars and Jupiter, along with their moons, were clearly visible through the telescopes. Other planets were obscured by haze near the horizon.

A crescent Venus appeared in the early morning sky.

3. Constellations:

Orion and Ursa Major were distinctly visible through the telescopes.

4. Deep-Sky Objects:

Participants successfully observed several Messier objects, including M12, M14, and the Orion Nebula (M42). Other observed deep sky objects included Alpha Centauri, Omega Centauri, and the Whirlpool Galaxy.

5. Meteor Activity:

A few early meteors were spotted, adding an unexpected thrill for the participants.

6. Early Morning Sky:

After 3 am, the early morning sky revealed constellations, a crescent Venus, and the magnificent galactic band of the Milky Way.

7. Astrophotography:

Attendees with DSLRs and other cameras captured stunning images of the moon and the star-filled night sky. Impressive photographs of the galactic band and portraits with it were also taken, along with several time-lapses of star trails.

Activities:

The camping location provided a comfortable setting for dinner illuminated by neon lights. Volunteers set up tents for participants to rest. A campfire created a fun and bonding atmosphere, with attendees working together to keep it burning despite moist wood and cold temperatures. Marshmallows were distributed and toasted, providing a delightful treat.

Conclusion:

Conceptus Celestia 2025 was a resounding success, seamlessly blending scientific exploration with captivating observations and fostering camaraderie among the participants. Attendees not only witnessed celestial wonders like the Orion Nebula, Jupiter’s moons, and the Milky Way's galactic band but also engaged in stimulating discussions on astronomy and its cultural significance. From detailed telescopic observations to enjoying toasted marshmallows by the campfire, the event successfully encouraged learning, exploration, and fun. Conceptus Celestia is sure to be remembered as a highlight of 2025 for all who attended.
